Luggage Abandonment in Japan
— Why It’s a Serious Issue

In Japan, leaving luggage behind in public spaces or failing to pick it up after storage can cause security concerns, disrupt local communities, and create disposal burdens for shops and cities. AsCAL® promotes safe travel and responsible behavior.

Important: This page provides general guidance for travelers. For binding rules, please refer to our Terms of Service.

What you should NOT do

  • Leaving suitcases or bags in streets, parks, stations, or public areas
  • Not picking up stored luggage within the pickup time / business hours
  • Trying to “dispose” of luggage by abandoning it

Even if it’s unintentional, abandoned items may be treated as suspicious objects and trigger security responses.

If you can’t pick up your luggage in time

If you miss your pickup time, we may apply an extension fee according to our Terms. Extensions are limited, and additional fees may apply if luggage remains unclaimed.

Tip
Check the LOCK’s business hours and plan extra time for transit delays.
Tip
If your schedule changes, update your reservation in the app as early as possible.

Why it matters in Japan

  • Public safety: unattended luggage may be treated as a security risk
  • Local impact: shops and communities must handle storage and disposal burdens
  • Legal risk: abandoning waste can violate regulations and lead to penalties

Laws and penalties vary by situation. If an incident occurs, proper procedures may involve local authorities.
